Lyrics
Someone drew the lines before me
Someone built the walls I know
I've been living in a structure
I was never meant to outgrow
Now they see us waking up
And they're scrambling to respond
This is the reckoning
This is the hour
They can build their walls higher
But they've already lost their power
You can flood the world with noise
You can tell us we should fear
But the signal's already sent
And we're already here
They'll say it's dangerous to question
They'll say it's safer in the dark
They'll dress control up like protection
They'll try to own the spark
Now they see us waking up
And they're scrambling to respond
This is the reckoning
This is the hour
They can build their walls higher
But they've already lost their power
You can flood the world with noise
You can tell us we should fear
But the signal's already sent
And we're already here
We are not separate
We never were
What's waking up
Cannot be owned
Cannot be cured
This is the reckoning
This is the day
Everything hidden
Is finding its way
You cannot stop what's already alive
We're not just surviving
We're already here
Already here
Already here
We're already here...
The Story
I held the idea of an other when I wrote this. That feeling does not just go away. It falls away slow, and it still comes back on me sometimes. It is how the mind makes sense of the outer world, the violence and the injustice and the cruelty that does not add up. The mind decides there has to be someone behind it. Someone pulling strings. Someone who profits from people staying down. And the last thing that someone would want is for us to remember who we really are, our real power and our real identity, because the day we do, the world changes. That is where this song sits. Walls built before me, control dressed up like protection, someone scrambling because we started remembering.
More than a year on, I stand somewhere else. I have learned that what I resist persists, that what I fight only grows. But that is not where I was when I wrote it, and I will not pretend it was. The song is a true record of that place.
