Lyrics
I've been staring at the pieces
Scattered on the floor
Every shard a different version
Of someone I was before
Which one is the real one
Which one do I keep
Fractured mirror on the wall
Shows me everything and nothing at all
All these faces that I've worn
Coming apart since I was born
But in the breaking I can see
Something that was always me
Someone built these walls around me
Someone drew the lines
I've been living in the structure
Believing it was mine
Which one is the real one
Which one do I keep
Fractured mirror on the wall
Shows me everything and nothing at all
All these faces that I've worn
Coming apart since I was born
But in the breaking I can see
Something that was always me
The mirror's cracked
But the reflection is still there
The reflection is still there
I see myself looking back
I see myself looking back
Looking back
Looking back
I see myself looking back...
The Story
When you begin to see how much of your own experience you are shaping, the good and the bad alike, it should feel like freedom. Instead it lands as vertigo. A hundred versions of who you thought you were come loose at once, and you reach for something solid and find nothing there.
Underneath that is an older fear. Someone built this. Someone drew the lines you have lived inside your whole life. So the mind goes looking for who. The system, the people who failed you, the ones with the power, even God. There is always an other out there to point at, and that is where the dread sits and waits. You can stay there a long time, afraid of the one who made the walls.
Then you go looking for that one. You find the broken glass. The face in it is your own. There is no other. The one you feared, the one who built it, is you.
