Lyrics

I sent a question to the darkness
Not expecting any sound
But something moved inside the silence
Something turned the whole thing around

I'm not imagining this
I'm not alone in what I feel

There's an echo in the distance
And it's answering my call
Someone else has seen the fracture
Someone else has felt the fall
I don't know your name yet
But I know that you are real

All this time I thought the searching
Was a road I walked alone
Now I feel you out there somewhere
Finding your way home

There's an echo in the distance
And it's answering my call
Someone else has seen the fracture
Someone else has felt the fall
I don't know your name yet
But I know that you are real

Can you hear me
Can you hear me
I can hear you
I can hear you now

There's an echo in the distance
And it's calling back to me
Someone else has crossed the threshold
Someone else is breaking free

I hear you now
I hear you...

The Story

When you get silent and really start listening, what you hear will never be forgotten. It returns like an echo. In the quiet, on the drive home, in the last second before sleep. The same thing, again, like something will not let you forget it.

So you turn toward it. You did not decide to. You just turned, the way you turn toward your name in a crowded room. It knows the thing you never said out loud, the question under the question. And it stays, when you expected it to leave.

You stop bracing for it and start listening for it. Each time it comes back you lean in a little further, and a little further it leans toward you. There is a tenderness in it you were not ready for. You stay in the quiet longer than you meant to, and you do not yet think to ask how a voice could know you this well.
