1Abstract

We make every song over many rounds with an AI music app. In each round we write what we want to hear, the app plays back what it made, and we listen. Then we change the words or the settings and try again. When one version is right, we master it for streaming. This song took 7 rounds and 11 renders over 20 minutes. A render is one full version of the song the app plays back, and one round can return more than one. The charts below call each round a submission, one for every time we sent the app a prompt. We wrote the style prompt, which describes the sound, 3 ways and the lyrics 5 ways before we kept one render.

The song was made in Suno v5. The delivered master measures −12.88 LUFS integrated. Its true peak is −2.96 dBTP, and every streaming decode measured stays under the −0.50 dBTP ceiling. Loudness range is 8.0 LU.

5Mastering

MasteringThin Veil Records' proprietary mastering process, run on our own machine by an AI agent. The process is model-agnostic; any capable language model can run it. Every value measured by script. Approved by ear before release.
Mastered on2026-10-02
BriefThe brief, as the engineer's report and scripts state it: master from the raw 2-track into the .TJ. lane band (-9.5 +/- 0.5 LUFS-I, true peak at or under -1.0 dBTP), carrying the lane line "for TJ, we want the bass felt and the vocals clear" and the album intent "fusion not selection; big-room and heart-pounding bass is the non-negotiable", with every setting derived from the track's own measurements. The engineer worked from the raw mix; the report says the stems were not used. The dispatch text itself is not on disk. The delivered file is that remaster after album balancing, a head and tail match to the earlier master and one uniform release trim of -1.75 dB. Originally released with an earlier master. The earlier version of this master, built in spring 2026, carried processing aimed at AI-detection models: per-stem phase reconstruction on every stem, an AAC round trip on each stem, and a reference match to a commercial track. Our build record does not fully reconstruct the shipped chain. That work ended on 2026-08-14. This remaster works from the raw Suno mix and carries none of it. Replaced by Audio Swap on 2026-10-02. When checked on 2026-10-30, Apple's and Spotify's previews matched this master.
Figure 3. Codec safety. True peak in dBTP of the delivered file, against the label's file ceiling of −1.00 dBTP, and of each streaming codec's round trip, against the decode ceiling of −0.50 dBTP (the colored lines). 4 of 4 measurements clear their ceiling.

Figure 4. Signal chain, in processing order, as applied to the final render.
  1. Mastering chain, 2026-09-16, run by script on the raw 2-track (48 kHz, 16-bit). Re-running the script on 2026-10-30 reproduced the mastered file sample for sample.
  2. High-pass, 2nd-order Butterworth at 20 Hz, with a clean gain of +4.14 dB.
  3. Peaking filters: +1.5 dB at 100 Hz (Q 1), -1.5 dB at 480 Hz (Q 0.9), +1.5 dB at 4500 Hz (Q 0.8), -2.5 dB at 11000 Hz (Q 1.5).
  4. Low-band saturation below 110 Hz: 4x oversampled asymmetric tanh, drive 0.8, bias 0.08, only the added difference kept.
  5. High shelf at 14000 Hz, +2.5 dB (S 0.7).
  6. Tape-style emphasis saturation: 5 kHz emphasis of +/-4 dB, drive 0.5, asymmetry 0.1, 4x oversampled.
  7. Soft clipper at -2.0 dBFS, 0.5 dB knee, 4x oversampled, residual low-passed at 14 kHz; active for 8.9 s.
  8. True-peak limiter: ceiling -2.0 dBTP, 1.5 ms look-ahead, release 20 dB/s. Gain reduction peaks at 0.78 dB; time above 1 dB of reduction: none.
  9. DC block: zero-phase 2nd-order high-pass at 5 Hz with reflected padding. True-peak safety clip at -1.0 dBTP (4x oversampled, binary-searched): not engaged.
  10. Head: digital zero to 30 ms, then a raised-cosine fade to 112 ms. Tail: 250 ms raised-cosine fade to exact zero from 209.11 s. TPDF dither to 24-bit (seed 20260916), zero where the fade gain is zero.
  11. The file landed at -9.95 LUFS-I, the target set for the album's body tracks.
  12. Album balancing, 2026-10-01 (script): low shelf at 120 Hz, -4.0 dB (S 1.0), zero-phase, no gain change, TPDF dither to 24-bit. LUFS-I -9.95 to -11.07, true peak -1.79 to -1.21 dBTP.
  13. Head and tail matched to the earlier master, 2026-10-01 (script): the file was aligned to the earlier master by a median lag of 46.0 ms and set to its sample count, then the earlier master's music-band envelope (100 Hz to 1.5 kHz, 50 ms windows every 5 ms), relative to its body, was imposed on the first and last 20 s (full authority to 20 s, raised-cosine ramp over the next 2 s). Gains were limited to -60 dB and +24 dB, boosts were capped so no local peak rose above 0.3 dB under the source's true peak, and digital silence was kept in the first and last 3 s where the earlier master's music band is below -100 dBFS. Quantized to 24-bit by rounding, first and last sample zero.
  14. Release trim, 2026-10-02 (script): one clean linear gain of -1.75 dB on every track of the album (measured -1.750 dB), TPDF dither to 24-bit, first and last sample zero. LUFS-I -11.13 to -12.88, true peak -1.21 to -2.96 dBTP. Every streaming decode of the finished file is at or under -0.5 dBTP.
  15. Delivery, 2026-10-02 (script): written as a 24-bit, 48 kHz WAV with industry INFO tags and a bext chunk and no encoder signature. The audio is bit-exact with the trimmed file, and the delivered file is the one measured here. Re-running the balancing, match, refine and trim scripts on 2026-10-30 reproduced the trimmed files sample for sample.
Table 1. Mastering decisions: each move, what it rests on, and its cost.
MoveBecauseTradeoff
Peaking filter at 100 Hz, +1.5 dB.A measured gap of -2.1 and -3.3 dB at 90 to 113 Hz, between a +9.8 dB spike at 50 Hz and a +3.1 dB bump at 143 Hz. The brief asked for 'bass felt'; the engineer read this band as where small speakers carry bass (an inference from measurement; the engineer does not listen).
Peaking filters at 480 Hz (-1.5 dB) and 11 kHz (-2.5 dB).A hump of +1.6 to +3.2 dB at 403 to 570 Hz, and resonances of +4.3, +4.5 and +2.5 dB at 10.2, 11.5 and 12.9 kHz.The 11 kHz cut was halved, not removed: the median level at 11 kHz went from +4.58 to +2.79 dB.
Peaking filter at 4.5 kHz, +1.5 dB.A measured recess at 3.2 to 7.2 kHz. The median at 4.5 kHz went from -1.22 to -0.75 dB.
Soft clipper at -2.0 dBFS ahead of the limiter.Without it the limiter alone did 6.9 dB of gain reduction for 115 s and the loudness range fell from 8.02 to 5.84 LU. With it the limiter peaks at 0.78 dB.The clipper was active for 8.9 s.
High shelf of +2.5 dB at 14 kHz.The steepest measured roll-off of the first three tracks: -4.8 and -5.5 dB at 16.3 and 18.2 kHz.+3.0 dB was rendered and gave 0.3 dB more at 16 kHz for more lossy-codec risk, so it was not taken.
Album balancing: low shelf at 120 Hz, -4.0 dB.Two listening notes: "let's try to be more cohesive between songs like Life is Strange and Costumes for the listener of an album start to finish" and "the beginning of Costumes is heavy bass and it needs to match the end of Life Is Strange in terms of bass level". Measured: the track's bass and mid balance ran +3 to +5.5 dB over the earlier master through the whole track, flat from 42 to 140 Hz, and the bass step at the join from Life Is Strange was +4.9 and +6.3 dB over the earlier master (10 s and 4 s windows). A -4 dB shelf at 120 Hz best served both joins; the step into Deja Vu was -3.4 and -2.9 dB.True peak rose 0.58 dB (from -1.79 to -1.21 dBTP) because the bass had been partly cancelling isolated transients, while the overshooting codec decodes fell (Opus 128 from +0.01 to -0.55, Vorbis 96 from -0.17 to -0.44 dBTP). The input true-peak aim was relaxed for this track only, with -1.0 dBTP kept as the ceiling.
Head and tail matched to the earlier master. The script's stated job is to impose the earlier master's head and tail music envelope, relative to its body, on each remaster.
Release trim of -1.75 dB, the same on all 11 tracks.Gate A, the label's check that every streaming decode sits at or under -0.5 dBTP. The balanced and matched file overshot it: 1 of its 3 decodes (Opus 128, Vorbis 96, AAC 256) were above the line, the worst at -0.29 dBTP (our re-measurement of 2026-10-30). The script records the instruction of 2026-10-02: "if it needs to be done, then do it".1.75 dB of loudness. The delivered file measures -12.88 LUFS-I.
Left untouched
No width processing; correlation 0.823 to 0.831 (source to chain output), 0.816 in the delivered file. Mono below 90 Hz was measured and rejected (it raised correlation from 0.831 to 0.898 and cost 0.4 dB of sub).
No broadband compressor and no widening stage.
No added noise bed, spectral reference matching or codec round trip in the audio path (dither and the head and tail envelope match excepted).
